For The Weekend: Kraken Spiced Rum Review

Kraken Black Spiced Rum

Grade: A+
Teacher’s Comments: My new favorite rum

Dark as midnight and squid ink, Kraken Black Spiced Rum is my new favorite to mix with either coke or ginger ale.

For me, the dominant flavors in Kraken Spiced Rum are vanilla and molasses. It’s sweet, but also simultaneously spicy. There’s definitely a taste of cinnamon, and probably cloves and nutmeg. The overall effect is flavorful and quite smooth.

Kraken Spiced Rum is 94 proof. By way of comparison, original Captain Morgan Spiced Rum is 70 proof. Captain Morgan Black is also 94 proof.

Rum and coke is a pretty common drink, but if you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend a Dark and Stormy. Specifically, I recommend a Dark and Stormy made with Vernor’s Ginger Ale. Vernors — on which I should probably do a full review in the future — is a Michigan treasure. It’s sort of the bourbon of ginger ales, as it is aged for three years in oak barrels. The flavor is sweet, with lots of vanilla. It’s got a real kick to it, though.

I can’t end this review without mentioning Kraken’s bottle — a two handled jug with a woodcut label which evokes 19th century whaling ships. The company’s advertising and branding is simply brilliant.
