Mental Mondays: Stay Focused On The Goal

Mental Golf TipsYour Mental Golf Tip for the week: Stay Focused On The Goal

Keep your eye on the ball (pun intended) and your scoring will improve. The single goal of golf is to get the ball into the hole in as few strokes as possible. Anything else is an unnecessary distraction.

So park the ego and forget about holding an unspoken long drive contest with your playing partners. Forget about the flop that Phil hit last week. Don’t worry about what club you “should” be hitting; use the one that will do the job.

Play what my friends refer to as “old man golf.” The senior citizens in our league always seem to be among the leaders in scoring. These guys barely hit it 180 off the tee, use a five iron from 140, and have been known to putt balls out of a sand trap. They play ugly. And yet at the end of almost every round, they’re in contention.

I think it’s because they’ve reached the age where there’s no need to try to impress anyone. They are focused on getting the ball into the hole as quickly as possible.

This tip is an excerpt from The Five Inch Course: Thinking Your Way To Better Golf. The complete book is available in Kindle format at Amazon.com.
