West Virginia Golf: Sharpstene Signs with Mountaineers
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Nov. 9, 2016) – West Virginia University golf coach Sean Covich announced Wednesday that Matthew Sharpstene (Charlotte, N.C./T.C. Roberson) has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Mountaineers for the 2017-18 season.
“Matthew has all the qualities we look for in a recruit: athletic, competitive and a ton of tournament experience,” said Covich. “Matthew turned a lot of heads with his outstanding play this summer, we are excited to get him. He’s a player that can have an immediate impact on our young program. Very excited to see him in the Old Gold and Blue the next four years!”
The No. 49-ranked recruit in the class of 2017, Sharpstene comes to Morgantown from North Carolina, where he competed for Lance Jaynes at T.C. Roberson High in Asheville. He is ranked in the overall top-100 in the nation, and is rated the fourth-best golfer in North Carolina for the class of 2017. Sharpstene is a three-time all-state selection who was named the 2015 Charlotte/Mecklenburg Player of the Year as well as the 2016 Western North Carolina Player of the Year. He was the 2016 4A Regional Medalist and finished sixth at the 2016 North Carolina 4A State Championship.
A native of Charlotte, Sharpstene qualified for the 2016 U.S. Junior Amateur with a score of 73-70 at the Asheboro Qualifier. He finished fourth at the U.S. Junior Amateur in stroke play with rounds of 74-66, advancing to match play. Sharpstene was the runner-up at the 2016 North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship with a score of 73-66-73 and tied for sixth at the 2016 Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship after shooting 76-68-74.
The son of Jeff Sharpstene and Keri McCormick, he intends to major in sports marketing and management at West Virginia.
The Mountaineers are in the midst of their second varsity season since being reinstated in 2013.
