Loving Lately – Winter 2018

Loving Lately - Winter 2018

I’ve been thinking a lot about what this whole “in it 4 the long run” means lately. Not the words per say, but what do I bring to the table as a blogger/podcaster/person. At the end of the day I’ve realized that I want to be the girlfriend you (virtually) go on a coffee date who reminds you that a.) you’re fucking awesome and b.) you got this and c.) it’s ok if things don’t look perfect right now (and it’s equally ok if they do!).

I’m definitely not a guru, I’m not trying to get you to follow a plan to achieve some narrow definition of health or any of that. I’m just here to share and celebrate the human experience (I guess that’s not super niche… oh well!)

Part of being the bff you go to grab a coffee (or tea, or ‘booch or a grapefruit margarita) with is sharing some stuff I’m super into that you might enjoy too. For a long time I was like “are these posts valuable at all?” and then I realized that I personally LOVE reading posts like these from other folks whose content I love. I’m sharing all the things that I would giddily share with you if we were hanging out together.

I wanted to take the time today and share some stuff I’ve been really loving lately that you might enjoy, too.

A couple notes on this post

Don’t feel pressured to do or buy any of the stuff at all. Seriously. Only act on it if it feels like something you’d be really into as well.

I can for sure guarantee none of these things is the magic pill for happiness. They won’t cure what’s ailing you inside. However, they might be something you’re into and would have fun with! I love getting recommendations from friends & I love giving them.

Also full transparency – many of these items (and not all) I have received in trade or as part of a sponsorship or just for free. All of these things I would TOTALLY buy again, buy for a friend and wholeheartedly recommend. This post is not in any way sponsored (which is not to say that I don’t fully believe in the sponsored work I do). I want to be clear that some of these products I’m sharing I have spent money on and some of them I haven’t (and that isn’t to say that I wouldn’t spend my money on them). Cool!

Products

Frank & Whitman

I would absolutely recommend this brand for the products alone. The face serum and toner are my go-to’s. And it gets even better…. the founder Chris is literally one of the most genuine, kind-hearted people I’ve had the privilege to meet. He pours his heart and soul into the business and it really shows. I’ve been lucky enough to spend time with Chris in Philly and LA for various events and his energy is so contagious.

My favorite products from Frank & Whit*

Res Ipsa Backpack

I discovered Res Ipsa through a Nantucket friend connection and I’m so excited to take it with me everywhere! Forget cute handbags, I’m a backpack girl all day. I love this backpack not only because it’s so unique and stylish, but also because of how durable and spacious it is. I’m excited to take it on adventures with me for years to come. Each piece is one of a kind and made from antique kilim rugs. They’re definitely investment pieces, but something you’ll have forever.

SK Coffee

I remember one of the first things my sister’s fiancé, Sam and I bonded over was our love of coffee. Now, almost three years later, it’s pretty amazing that I get to drink coffee that Sam roasts. And guys, it’s really good. Chris and I go through it so quickly and enjoy every last sip. If you love a good fresh coffee and love the process of making it and savoring it, I can’t recommend SK enough. They’re often getting beans from new regions, so if it’s available, my favorite is definitely the Kenyan.

Loving Lately - Winter 2018

Saje Wellness Essential Oils

I had heard a lot of hype around Saje from a handful of folks, so I was definitely curious about the brand. When I was in LA, I met with an awesome employee who gave me a really comprehensive tour of one of their stores. What I really love about this brand, in particular, is how targeted and specific the different blends and applications are. The pocket pharmacy is really unique and it’s a pack of 5 different oil blends targeted for common ailments like the cold, muscle pain, headaches, stress and stomach aches. It just so happened that I got a pretty gnarly cold this past week so I’ve been really impressed with how much relief I get from the fortify roller. If you’re new to essential oils and it’s been something you’ve wanted to try, I think this is a great brand to get started with. It’s really comprehensive and targeted so you can focus on products that actually target things you’re interested in. For me, a lot of that was energy in the morning. So the body mist and liquid sunshine diffuser blend have been really key in that area.

Drippy Mug

I discovered the artist who makes these amazing drippy creations through a friend Olivia @wholesome.olive on Instagram. Being a mug addict, I just couldn’t help myself. It’s even more awesome in person. They aren’t cheap, but I don’t regret buying it for a single second. If you like ceramics and view your mug collection as an art installment then you’ll love these mugs.

Collagen*

Collagen is having a moment right now. It’s everywhere. And I think it’s for good reason. Again, this isn’t going to cure blindness or fix everything overnight. I just think it’s an awesome (and super easy) source of nutrition. I’ve been using the marine collagen from Vital Proteins* and I throw it in either hot lemon water or if I’m making a turmeric latte. Lots of folks love it in their coffee. You can’t taste it, it’s a great source of protein and it’s good for you hair skin and nails.

Healthy Human 12 oz Tumbler

I’m a huge fan of all of Healthy Human’s different drinking vessels because a.) they work and b.) I love how they’re designed and c.) the people behind the company are really wonderful. They just came out with a new size of their tumbler and I LOVE it.* So cute right? It’s perfect for bringing to your favorite coffee shop and getting the right sized latte/coffee/tea. And yes, I got an iced oat milk latte in this bad boy when I was off island last weekend. I also love that they come with metal straws which you can use again and again and again.

Coastal Blue Light Blocking Glasses

Lots of folks have been asking about these glasses. They aren’t prescription, they just have blue light blocking lenses which is great if you’re at a computer or screen a lot of the day. The blue light can be really damaging for your eyes and also keep you up at night or at least give you less quality sleep. Bonus – I love the frames of these glasses. I’ve always secretly wanted a pair and now I feel like I finally have a reason to own them.

Activities

Knitting

In case you didn’t already think I was a twenty-five-year-old grandma, here’s more proof. Knitting. I’ve been loving knitting as a relaxing nighttime activity. For some reason, I can’t just watch TV or listen to a book on tape on its own. I have to be doing something else too. So instead of endless scrolling on my phone knitting is the perfect pair for evening entertainment. Plus you actually get something really cool as an end result. Of course, I love to start things so I have like three knitting projects going at any one time, but hey there’s no rules right?

Here’s an easy hat pattern I love!

Meditation

I’ve been talking about wanting to get into meditation for months, maybe even years. It feels like everyone and their mom is telling you to meditate so I don’t want to harp on you if it’s not your thing. Really. Really. However, if you’re like me and have WANTED to do it but just couldn’t bring yourself to sit for 10 minutes, after 3 weeks of consistent mediation I definitely think it’s been worth it. What really made all the difference for me was finding the right music (I know, I can’t believe it was that simple all along).

this playlist on Spotify is just what I need and I’ll set an alarm for 10-15 minutes depending on my mood that day.

One of my favorite visualizations is imagining a squeegee (like the ones at the car wash) cleaning all the thoughts out of my mind. Or I’ll think about my thoughts as rain on a car windshield and I’ll visualize windshield wipers clearing those thoughts away.

Once I’ve done my “mind cleaning” visualizations then I’ll try to focus on a physical feeling, like appreciation or pure joy and try to really physically embody that.

It’s still a work in progress but the whole process has helped me become more aware of where I’m at each day versus getting caught on autopilot.

Barre

After taking a veeeery extended break from a regular exercise routine, I’ve been really enjoying barre. I go to Studio Nantucket on island. It’s a relatively new studio downtown and it’s beautiful! The owner, Meg is one of the best instructors I’ve taken a class with. Everyone who teaches there is really amazing. What I love about barre is that it’s really challenging and at the same time you’re not jumping around and spiking your heart rate. For me, I’m not looking to do a ton of intense sweaty exercise right now. I love the slow controlled and mindful movements in barre. I feel really connected to my body when I work out in this way. If you’re not on Nantucket I also love Barre3.

Drinks & Recipes

I was going to include drinks, food, and recipes but honestly, I was really just excited about the beverages. I am a beverage-y person and never realized this until kind of recently. Maybe it was the 5 different drinks around my laptop that gave it away? What can I say, I love a good elixir of the caffeinated, superfood, flavorful or alcoholic variety.

Turmeric Latte

I feel like turmeric is having a moment right now, and I’m here for it. I know it has lots of anti-inflammatory properties, but I’m honestly just loving the savory spicy kind of flavor. If it’s healing my body at the same time then that’s icing on the cake. I’m coming out with the recipe next week (I know a new recipe post craaay) and I promise it’s worth the wait. However, if you like to wing it ratio wise I can tell you it includes: turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, hot water, coconut milk, MCT oil, honey, vanilla extract, and collagen.

Pour Overs

I always thought I was a die-hard French press kinda girl. Then Chris and I started using our single-serve pour over dripper. Now I’m a total convert. It’s really easy and way less mess than cleaning up the French press. I think it’s the perfect place to start if you’re getting into good coffee and wanting to really taste all the yummy flavors.

This is similar to the pour over we have

Oat Milk

If you’re not super into dairy or least in your coffee, might I recommend oat milk? Before you roll your eyes at YET another non-dairy milk, allow me to proclaim that this one is way better than all the others. It’s the closest thing consistency wise and it’s really creamy without being too sweet. It’s definitely catching on in a lot of coffee shops. My iced latte game had totally changed thanks to oat milk. So good.

Homemade Green Juice

This is the juicer I use: it is pricey! Don’t feel like you need one like this but if you want to make an investment and love making juice, this juicer is awesome. It’s cute, easy to use, keeps lots of fiber in the juice, and is really easy to clean. I had a cheaper juicer in the past and it just wasn’t worth keeping because it was such a pain in the ass to clean. This one I use every single week.

My favorite juice combo: cucumber, celery, ginger, lemon, pear, and kale

I also have a recipe/tutorial for making juice with just a blender here

She’s a fellow islander and a true breath of fresh air in this space. She shares so much insight and wisdom on the yoga mat, through Instagram and she actually lives what she talks about.

@ktnewms – one of my favorite Instagram accounts ever. I just love her coffee photos, style and she seems so sweet.

@realandvibrant – beautiful, meal inspiration especially if you’re a meal-worthy salad lover. I also made this babe at the GOODfest and she’s so wonderful and kind.
