Katke-Cousins, Plum Hollow and Grosse Ile Hosting GAM Senior Mid-Am Championship
FARMINGTON HILLS – The popular 8th GAM Senior Mid-Am Team Championship presented by Omni Kinetics kicks the golf season into high gear with 264 of the state’s best male golfers playing at three sites Monday – the Katke-Cousins Course at Oakland University, Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield and Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club.
Each site will host 44 teams of one senior golfer age 55-plus paired up with a mid-amateur player age 25-plus. Each team will play 18 holes of four-ball or best-ball in the morning and 18 holes of foursomes, also known as alternate shot, in the afternoon.
The top two teams at the close of the 36-hole day will earn spots in the Senior Mid-Am Finals scheduled for the North course at Oakland Hills Country Club on Friday, Sept. 15.
Last year, the father-son team of Mike and Steve Fedewa of Canton shot a 1-under 69 in nine holes of four-ball and nine holes of foursomes to win the 7th GAM Senior/Mid-Am Team Championship Finals presented by Omni Kinetics at Barton Hills Country Club.
The Fedewa duo stopped the four-year GAM Mid-Am Championship title streak of Greg Reynolds of Grand Blanc and Casey Baker of Novi.
Both of those teams return and will be in action Monday at Oakland University.
The Katke-Cousins course at Oakland U. is one of two courses at the site, and the original course on the property. It was designed by Bill Newcomb and plays to over 7,100 yards. It has been the site of several championships, most recently hosting multiple Michigan PGA Professional Championships. Bill Rogers is the manager, Perry Busse the golf professional and Tom Schall the superintendent.
Plum Hollow, founded in 1921, was the original work of the legendary English design team of Colt & Alison and features surprising elevations changes. It has a rich tournament history, including hosting the 104th Michigan Amateur Championship in 2015 and hosting the 1957 Western Open of the PGA Tour. It plays to nearly 6,800 yards. Mike Bargeris is the general manager, John Jawor the head golf professional and John Sabat the superintendent.
Grosse Ile is a Donald Ross original design founded in 1919, and features classic challenging greens. It also has a rich tournament history having hosted multiple GAM championships, including hosting the Michigan Amateur Championship in 2004. It plays to just over 6,800 yards. John Paul is the general manager. Eric Ganzberger is the golf professional and Todd Probert is the superintendent.
