Garmin’s Technology Show & Charity Golf Outing to Benefit Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors
SOUTH LYON – The 6th annual Garmin Automotive OEM Technology Show & Charity Golf Outing to benefit Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors (MiOFA) will attract 360 people, including 144 golfers, Tuesday to Tanglewood Golf Club.
Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. and Garmin’s feature presentation starts at 9:30 with demonstrations of the latest technologies, and the golfers will take to the course at 12:30 p.m. for a unique scramble event. The show and outing have raised almost $250,000 for charities in the last five years.
“People from around the world are coming to this, and our event is the day before the Telematics Update Automotive Detroit Conference and Exhibition at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi starts, so it kicks off what is really a full week of automotive industry dialogue, and in the process does wonderful things for charity,” Rob Guzanek, marketing manager, Automotive OEM, said.
Charity partner MiOFO is a cooperative partnership which provides outdoor recreation opportunities for individuals with health challenges, and coordinates support networks that facilitate recovery through connecting with nature. The Ann Arbor-based Eisenhower Center is a support partner of MiOFO, a 501c3.
Currently MiOFO is conducting a special essay contest in which the winner will receive an Action Trackchair – an all-terrain wheelchair that helps those with mobility challenges enjoy the outdoors. The winner must have the medical need for this type of device and no other means of obtaining it. Read about it at the following link: http://bit.ly/2qQxc3v.
The technology show will draw the large crowd and showcase the latest Garmin infotainment systems, display audio systems with extension box, next generation low-cost entry level head unit, HMI design concepts, camera solutions and integration of wearables.
Guzanek said the golf outing takes on a different personality from the technology portion of the day, and will offer golfer advantage packages for various costs. Proceeds benefit MiOFO.
“Specifically we outline a way to pay to obtain things like yardage and a better score,” he said. “Mulligans are old school. We have really creative things to make the average golfer feel like a pro. And help the work of Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors.”
Multiple cups or hole locations will be cut on the par 3 second hole on the South course, and the first hole-in-one recorded on the center hole location on that special hole will win $50,000 toward the purchase of a 2017 Honda Pilot Limited AWD equipped with Garmin Navigation. Other premium prizes will be awarded for the other hole locations.
Tom Jones, MiOFO coordinator, is elated that the highly successful Garmin event is benefitting wounded veterans and others with health challenges. He said those who are unable to be part of the Garmin show and outing can use the donate button at www.miofo.org.
