Although the PGA Championship is two months away, bettors already are lining up behind Rory McIlroy as the odds-on favorite to win the PGA Championship in 2017. McIlroy won the PGA Championship in 2014 and 2012, putting him in the company of names like Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Gary Player as a two-time winner. McIlroy has yet to win in 2017, however, and as of this writing is working off the effects of a rib injury. He did, however, finish T4 at the HSBC Championships and at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. At the year’s first Major, The Masters, McIlroy finished T7.
Given his record in 2017, Dustin Johnson is a surprising second among bettors at 8/1. After winning the US Open in 2016, Johnson has three 2017 wins, and stands at #1 in the FedEx Cup and OWGR standings. He is first in shots gained off the tee, averaging 312 yards driving. He’s also first in greens in regulation and in total shots gained. Those are impressive stats that make him a logical choice.
Jordan Spieth has been unable to duplicate his magical 2015 season, but has had a solid 2017. He has a win at a T2 at the Dean & Deluca and a solo third at the Sony Open. While he just missed the top ten at the Masters this year, by the time the PGA rolls around, he could very well have another US Open, or his first Open Championship under his belt. It all depends on whether he can get those long bombs with the putter going.
Jason Day is in at 11/1. He won the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in 2015, and there is absolutely no reason to think he couldn’t join the ranks of two-time winners soon.
An interesting pick at 16/1 is Hideki Matsuyama. The Japanese-born player is on a lot of people’s short list of best players not to win a major. In 2017, Matsuyama has wins at the WGC-HSBC Champions and the Waste Management Phoenix Open, as well as a second in the SBS Tournament of Champions. He has four to tens and is #3 in the FedExCup rankings. The PGA Championship has long been friendly to out-of-the-box winners (Jimmy Walker? Yang Yong-eun? Shaun Micheel? Rich Beem?) so this may be the one for Matsuyama.
